Beginners

"So...How does this band thing work?"

New students spend one year learning all they need to be in band. They are placed on an instrument and put in a beginner class. Most instruments are purchased by their parents on a rent-to-own basis. The most expensive instruments (Tuba, Euphonium, French Horn, Bassoon and Bass Clarinet) are rented from the school.

During that year they will learn to read music and play their instrument. At the end of the year, they will perform as a band in a concert.

Their second and third year they finally get the real band experience. Second year students are placed in a full band class appropriate for their ability level. This band class will put on concerts for parents, compete in full band contests, perform for pep rallies and football games, perform in small groups and compete in individual all region competitions.

Band is compatible with any school activity. In band we have players from every sport, including football, just like the high school band does. We have cheerleaders, artists, theater students, even orchestra and choir. Your child can do band and anything.

This is not easy. Music study takes grit, focus and appreciation for delayed gratification. It requires a student to step up in to a new level personal responsibility and growth. They all want to give up at some point and need your support, encouragement and guidance.

It is worth it. Please take some time to look the extensive library of research available online that dives in to the benefits of music study. When you are faced with all of this evidence, you will quickly realize your student is getting involved in the very best part of education. We are the whetstone that sharpens every tool they gain in school.
